De Suikertuin

We were looking to try some new restaurants this trip. We came across De Suikertuin on this website and couldn't be happier with it. The atmosphere was a beautiful antique house like I have never seen on the island. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. The food was incredibly tasty and the portions were generous.

There weekly special list was also great. No doubt we will be back.

Our lovely server told us that Suikertuin means "sugar garden" and this breakfast/lunch place does seem like a sweet oasis in the middle of Oranjestad. The charming old building with its 12" thick stone walls, as well as the peaceful courtyard out back, create a relaxing environment. The food we ordered seemed so fresh and wholesome and included Dutch pea soup, the hotch potch special (mashed potatoes and sauerkraut with an egg instead of sausage), and a seafood salad, all for $35 including tip. Everything was tasty and nicely presented. Highly recommended this unique restaurant for a refreshing, delicious stop on a hot, dusty day in town.

They have very good vegetarian food. A special dish we had was the vegetarian quiche and the home made apple pie was tremendous. They have very good dutch coffee. Don't forget to ask for "awa di lamoenchi". fresh made lemon juice.
