Madame Janette
Ramon Helgers and Karsten Gesing founded Madame Janette April 2nd
1999. Their collaboration resulted into a place, which offers fine dining in a casual atmosphere.

Ramon is responsible for the exotic fruits, herbs and vegetables you will find in not only our dishes, but also in most supermarkets on Aruba. Karsten, a European Master Chef, trained in 'old school' traditions creates, with help from his knowledgeable international
staff, tasteful and creative dishes. Their combined worldwide experience
gives their dishes an original flavour with a touch of Caribbean in it. We call it the Madame Janette Experience! We hope that you will have a wonderful dining romance.

MJ was always on our "must visit list" but not anymore. For the past two years we have not returned. Pricing has gone way up while size of portions and quality has gone down. For many years we always looked forward to a dinner at MJ's but something has changed. Too bad.

This use to be my favorite restaurant. I don't know what happened but it has gone down hill. The service was terrible! We had to have my husbands drink fixed three times! When I asked for another class of wine he totally forgot to bring it. The food was ok it use to be so much better. My waiter asked me if I wanted to see a dessert menu so I said yes. Ten minutes later he came back with the bill. Guess I would not be having dessert. Skip this use to be stable. Much better food on the island elsewhere.

We have been dining at MJ's since they opened in 1999. We always eat their at least 2x when visiting Aruba. This year was the exception and it was not due to the service or quality of the food. It had to do with the affordability We usually have a nice bottle of wine, appetizer, entree, desert and coffee. The wine list is extensive but the wines are not inexpensive. There were two bottles at $50 and from there went up to $1000. All the entree specials started at $34. The appetizer specials started at $14. We had the asparagus and lobster ravioli appetizers. Three asparagus, 1/2 a tomato, some greens as garnish and a creamy blue cheese dressing. The lobster ravioli appetizer was two raviolis for $17. While I am not opposed to paying for a nice dinner this was a little over the top. Even though the service is excellent and the food is delicious we will try to find a different restaurant as the same caliber but a little less pricey. I am sure with all the new restaurants opening up this will not be a problem.

I've been to MJ few years ago and was disapointed but decided to give it another chance. The food was OK I found it too salty the bang bang shrimp was just fried shrimp with some dressing and the Sea bass was good but the sauce on top of it was salty and it was just like gravy too much corn starch or gravy in a package. Overall was not bad but I am very good cook and when I go to restaurant maybe my expectations are too high. Also the wine selection by the glass was very poor on the webpage there were more choices including wine from California but in the restaurant was only French by the glass and was not very good.

Usually we enjoy this restaurant. However, this year we found the food just average. We were seated next to a woman who smoked through the entire meal and found that very irritating.I had surf and turf-steak was very thin, shrimp was OK, lobster was tough and cold.Probably will skip it next year.

Ate here twice last week, the first time was perfection, possibly the best meal we've had at Mde. J (and this is our favorite Aruba restaurant, so that is saying something). Highly recommend the Filet Mignon Gianni Versaci. Second meal was on Flag Day, in the middle of a hideous rainstorm. I mean, rain like I have never seen before. Most of the seating at the restaurant is outside. That area was quickly flooding, so all of us were moved to the covered area near the bar, and dinner went on as planned. After dinner, the parking lot was under a foot of water. A staff member, in rain gear and bare feet, took our car keys and drove our car up to the elevated ramp by the main entrance, so that we could make a run for the doors. I heard later on that they also drove several guests to their hotels! Such service!

Food and service were again good, particularly under difficult circumstances.

Can't wait to come back in July!

Last year we had some concerns about MADAME JANETTE (MJ) - BUT, they actually must have read our previous review and they actually did something about it and they did it so well that they have climbed back into contention as one of the better dining experiences in ARUBA. Just to make sure, we dined there twice during our stay this year and they were also consistent in their improved performance and we were impressed with that. LADIES and GENTLEMEN, THE MADAME IS BACK! Overall, the restaurant is probably the best overall food/service/price combination in ARUBA and it really is a place not be missed. GO - ENJOY!

One of our favorite resturants on the island. The grouper is to die for. They also make a wonderful frozen marguarita - if that's your fancy. The portions are huge .. you can share a salad and the entrees will provide you with leftovers for another night. The potato casserole is a must as is the spinach casserole. We love this place and make it a "must visit" each year.

Madame Jeanette’s – a Carribean destination restaurant that’s a $9 cab ride away from the high rise district. (Don’t even try to walk! You’ll get lost and there are no sidewalks en route.) I loved the crab cakes we shared as an appetizer. I got the shrimp with coconut crust and red thai curry sauce. I was surprised that the shrimp was deep-fried – it wasn’t mentioned in the description. I liked it, but it got heavy after awhile.

The outdoor atmosphere was pretty magical, but it definitely was a crowded night (we went on a Friday evening). Wear insect spray, but if you forget, there’s some in the restroom. Reservations a must…
