Sunset Grill is the fine dining restaurant in the Radisson Hotel, and have both inside and outside seating. We tried this restaurant for the first time, and were very disappointed. Last November we ran into a waiter that had been one of our favorites for many years at Chez Mathilde. He told us he was working at the Sunset Grill, and asked us to come eat at his new restaurant. As we were leaving Aruba shortly, we told him it wasn’t possible on that trip, but that we’d definitely eat there when we were back in May. When we made our reservation, we were assured we’d have a table with him. We didn’t find out he was no longer working there until we arrived at the restaurant, and then they finally told us he had left the previous month. Also, the island was very quiet, and all of the restaurants were empty, but they refused to take a reservation for either 7:30 pm or 8:00 pm (these times weren’t full, they just wouldn’t accept a reservation for this time from anyone, and we did make our reservation a week in advance). They insisted that they could only seat us 7:00 pm or earlier, or 8:30 pm or later. It wasn’t because they were full, they just wanted the stay with their routine from high season when it was busy (no other restaurant imposed their high season rules during a very slow time – just the Sunset Grill). We accepted the 8:30 pm reservation, and arrived a few minutes early. When we arrived, there was a line of people waiting to check in. Instead of checking people in and bringing them to their table immediately, they took your name and asked you to wait. There were plenty of empty tables, more than enough to take care of everyone waiting, plus give everyone a choice of where they wanted to sit (inside or outside, table or booth, etc.). It took over 15 minutes from the time you left your name until you were finally seated. It got so bad one couple told the man at the desk that they were going to the casino, and to come get them when they were ready to serve them. We then made the mistake of eating inside, and could barely hear each other across the table. It was so noisy, we couldn’t hear the piano (we saw a man at the piano, and saw his hands moving, but couldn’t hear any music). Our appetizers were so unremarkable, I can even remember what we ordered. We each had a small Caesar salad, and it wasn’t very good – soggy from too much dressing, similar to what you’d get in a chain restaurant in the US. For the entrées we had one order of tuna and one order of the shrimp stuffed with crab. The tuna was good, but the shrimp was just OK (have had much better at other restaurants). The best thing about the dinner was the side order of steak fries. We also noticed dinners being returned to the kitchen, so we know that other people weren’t happy with what they received the night we were there. We feel the quality wasn’t up to the prices they charged, and we didn’t like the way they delayed taking you to your table after checking in. However, our waiter was excellent, one of the only bright spots in a dismal evening (the service score of 5 is a combination of 10 for the waiter and 0 for the people up front). Needless to say, we won’t be back.
