Sushi-Ya & NextDoor

I live here in Aruba and we decided to eat some sushi. We go all the time to Sushi ya but every time the service is terrible. Last night however was the worst experience. We had to wait 1,5 hours for our order and when I asked the girl asked us what our order was again because the 'computer broke'. In the meanwhile the tables that came 40 minutes later than us got their orders. After asking and asking, going inside the restaurant cause they wouldnt want to talk to us or apologize the table next to us that came 40 minutes after us in got the same order we had. We walked away angry and up sad. NEVER GOING HERE AGIAN! The manager is the WORST

We choose this restaurant because Some of us wanted to eat sushi. Some of us do not like sushi, however Sushi-Ya had more to offer. We all were disappointed about the Quality of the food. Further more it was also expensive.

We advies you to go to another sushi restaurant for a better Quality.

Service bad, waitress attitude worse, got wrong order, ordered 4 dishes, got 1 right, 1 wrong ate that, asked for my bill and left. Went to Gari washabi 2 days earlier and that was 100 times better

my husband and I were searching for a good sushi restaurant, and we read that this place had great reviews. So we went there and the service was terrible. The waitress was very rude to us and the sushi was not fresh.A total waste of time and money.
I recommend for you to go to Blossoms at the Westin hotel. Service was ok. -The sushi was fresh. Amazing food. Make sure to make reservations before heading out there.

We(4 people)went yesterday night (dec 27)to try something new because we use to go to Nobushi sushi and the review was good but how disapointed we were...the service was too long, we were always need to ask for everything, water, wine...and wait.Their sushi were good. we try dragon,volcano,rainbow and spicy tuna but it was their best, so if we compare to nobushi, it has creativity with sauce, special care one you could not expect like banana roll are really more TASTY ! Yes it is more expensive but the price goes with all it deserve, if you are expenting the basic you will be satisfied.

There are alot of mixed reviews on this website so I was cautiously optimistic about going to Sushi Ya at the Playa Linda. It was EXCELLENT. Mayella (pronounced Magella) was a wonderful server. I asked her advice on the best menu items and she enthusiastically suggested the Yamaguchi roll ... and it was the best sushi I have ever had anywhere. Our other dishes were excellent too. The food and service were just wonderful. I highly recommend this restaurant. We are here for another 8 nights and I will definitely be going back before we leave.

Playa Linda location.
arrived at 18:30. Restaurant was completely empty, but they said they were fully booked with reservations. Luckily one in our party of 6 speaks the local language and we were seated after all. By the time we left, almost 2 hours later, only 2 or 3 small tables were occupied(?)
Since we were the only guests, service was a lot faster than usual. We ordered a broad selection of cold and hot appetizers, shashimi and rolls. Food was good compared to other sushi bars on the island, not too much cream cheese and / or fried stuff.

In my opinion the best way to judge the quality of a sushi bar is by it's sashimi since it provides no means for hiding any lack of quality. If it's good, most other things don't matter. If it isn't, most other things don't matter either.

So we set out for some nice food and ordered the biggest sashime-dish available along with some maki.

Now I don't understand why so many people in these reviews are content with the food because the sashimi we were given was shamefully bad. None of the fish was fresh. All of it had been frozen solid before serving. You don't tast fish anymore, just a rigid spunge of which water comes pouring out when you bite in it. Try de-breading a uncooked fish finger and take a bite. That's about it. Sure it looked nicely and sure the service was good. But what does it matter if the sushi was all defrosted only an hour before instead of being fresh as it should be.

We chose the Sushi-Ya in Oranjestad versus the one in Playa Linda because of other reviews on this site. It is a small little place but nicely designed. We sat inside which had traditional Asian seating where you had to take your shoes off. The sushi was fresh and prepared nicely. The waitstaff was good. The toilets were up a windy staircase, which may be difficult if you are handicapped. Although, they were kept nicely clean. Dessert was very good (fried bananas with ice cream). Saki was good but they also had other cocktail selections. Ambiance was good but nothing special. Food was very good but overall experience was nothing spectacular. Prices were fair to moderate. If in the mood for sushi again, I would probably go there again.

Ate here the week of March 21, 2009 and thoroughly enjoyed the food! Oddly enough, I don't really care for sushi but went because my boyfriend loves it. I had the dragon and california and shrimp tempura - great for a first timer! All I can say is WOW! The service was very good and the outside atmosphere was nice as well. We wanted to eat at the location downtown but it was closed for renovations. The location at Playa gets two thumbs up!
